CUNNEEN'S .COM LICENSE PLATE BILL CLEARS MAJOR HURDLE Namezero.com signs up hundreds for plate that will give all proceeds to help fight the digital divide in low performing schools Sacramento, CA, June 22, 2000 -
The Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday provided bipartisan support for Assembly
Bill 2702 authored by Assembly members Jim Cunneen (R-San Jose) and Rod Pacheco
(R-Riverside). This legislation would create a license plate with a ".com" symbol on the
right side of the plate. This will allow people to display a message followed by the
".com" logo. A portion of the proceeds from the license plate fees will go to bridge the
digital divide, by giving money to schools in California that need help to buy computers
and gain Internet access. Hundreds of people have already requested the .com license
plate through the Namezero.com website (www.namezero.com).
"The high tech industry is now one of the most important elements of the California
economy and lifestyle," said Cunneen." This is a perfect way of honoring the
contributions of the industry, while also providing an opportunity for people to help
bridge the digital divide in our children's schools".
"We are very pleased by Assemblyman Cunneen's leadership in pushing this bill through the
legislature," said Bruce Keiser, President and COO of Namezero.com. Namezero.com is
sponsoring the legislation, and will help collect the 7,500 applications to put the plate
into production. "As the only internet domain name registrar to provide free .com domain
names, domain hosting, domain based e-mail, and the Namezero Passport Service, Namezero
believes that a .com license plate is a great way to extend an Internet identity and, at
the same time, help bridge the digital divide."
AB 2702 has the support of Silicon Valley companies like Hewlett Packard and Applied
Materials, as well as computer non-profit organizations like Compumentor. The bill is
currently headed to the Senate Appropriations committee.
